From Birtavarre, you can make daytrips to Finlands highest mountain, Halti/Haltiatunturi. Only a few hours walk and less climbing than from anywhere else. In Birtavarre/Kåfjorddalen there is a road/trail up to the far end of Lake Goulas at 800m, which makes access to all the mountain landscapes much easier. From Camp Birtavarre/E6 there is about 28 kilometers to the lake, (Summer road for cars / Trail for belt machines in winter. Or by foot or skies if you prefer.)
About the first 8 of the 28km can be made on asphalt, but keep in mind that the rest 20 km gravel summer road are on various quality, especially the last few km can be difficult for very small/low cars. Unfortunately the summer road does not open at a fixed date, but is dependent on the conditions. Generally if will be some days out in June before the road is fully open, but you may be able to drive the lower parts in mid may.
From the road to Halti you can also access the Sabetjohk mountain landscape, Gorsa canyon and Gorsabrua (Gorsa bridge), Lake Goulas, and Birtavarre mountains, Reisa national park, and more. Highest point of the Halti mountain is in Norway 1361 moh, at Ráisduottarháldi, about 2 km from Finlands point. The rest of the route to follow is highly dependent of the actual season. In general you can fairly easy follow paths and directions from maps in the summer season, while in the winter you might go a straighter and a shorter route. GPS is a good tool in all seasons.
The conditions from summer to winter will of course be very different, but keep in mind that in can be harse in all seasons an snowy weather can occur also summertime. Springtime can be a very nice time to climb Halti on skies, but it can be very difficult to predict snow and weather conditions from day to day, so you should be very well prepared. And as in every season, well equipped. You may want to try Halti by foot at springtime, and you can actually get lucky and find hard snow to walk on instead of on tumbling stones, but if you instead meet very soft snow you will need skies, or at least snowshoes.
